Composite fillings or Amalgam!

We have all been exposed to a great deal of controversy regarding the Amalgam debate. A common presenting complaint at the dentist concerns the patients desire to remove existing amalgam (grey) fillings to have them replaced with a suitable tooth coloured substitute.

Common concerns from clients regarding amalgam relate to their mercury content and/or their unsightly appearance where visible.

Whereas it has not been established that the Mercury in metal fillings causes general health problems, it is certainly a legitimate concern that this filling material is un-cosmetic, which begs the question of how best to deal with this.

The good news is that there are now modern tooth coloured materials suitable for use in posterior teeth. The most common material used is ‘Composite Resin’ a combination of resin and microscopic glass particles which give the material its toughness and cosmetic properties. Even more up-market are porcelain based restorations which can now be made in-chair or through a dental ceramicist (dental porcelain technician). These restorations are amazingly natural in appearance.

At Dental on Metro we are an amalgam-free practice. We also provide a full suite of in-chair and technician mediated tooth coloured restorations and tooth whitening.
